Hello there! Welcome to Naturally Renewed. On this site, I will be sharing researched approaches that have helped people heal. At times, I will share what got these people sick in the first place. I do not diagnose problems for anyone, nor do I prescribe anything. See detailed disclaimer below.
Allison Cantilina, RN
It is your right and responsibility to be informed on the latest health and wellness research to make the best choices for yourself.
So how did I become interested in complementary medicine? As a young RN in the 80’s, I was working for a Birth and Midwifery Center. Doing a home visit one day with a new mommy and baby, I went down my little “protocol” list and asked if she was taking her iron supplement.
She kindly put me in my place. “Oh no,” she states, “the body has a hard time assimilating that and it makes you constipated, I am taking Yellow Dock.” Ahem, what was that? So I learned that Yellow Dock is a plant, an herb, high in natural iron. Women have been using it for centuries for low iron levels. She told me about her Naturopath who was also an RN. I went to see her and was in awe of this “new” mindset of natural health. I read, studied, went back to school and continue learning. I thought, why doesn’t anyone know about this?
Which leads me to my personal health story. When my firstborn was around 5, we were trying to have another child. Either I could not conceive, or the pregnancies ended in miscarriage. I went to a fertility doctor. He wanted to blow out my fallopian tubes, give me high dose hormones.
I left the office and cried in my car. This can’t be right, I had my first child just fine. No problems with fertility, or labor and delivery. Something is out of balance. I cried and prayed to the Lord. Show me what to do. Shortly after, I met my naturopath as explained above.
Long story short, I had a baby. My naturopath taught me to eat better, take herbs and get back in balance. The pregnancy was uneventful, with a natural delivery in the local birthing center. My herbal baby is all grown up now and has a baby of her own. Obviously this is not the answer for everyone. As a pediatric nurse, I have taken care of many healthy IVF babies. We humans are not “one size fits all”. Educate yourself on your specific health concern. Talk to informed health care providers. Take your concerns to the Lord in prayer with all you have learned and make the right decision for yourself.
Fast forward, I recently broke a bone in my foot. I chose to have surgery to put screws in my bones so it would heal straight. Modern medicine can be wonderful. Am I taking supplements to nourish and heal my bones? You betcha.
Modern medicine has a lot to offer. Alternative remedies have a lot to offer as well. Exciting research is being done every day in all fields of health and medicine. Why not first try less toxic solutions instead of, or even along with, conventional recommendations? I have a passion for education. I hope you do, too.
I am an RN, a graduate of Felician University. My work experiences include medical/surgical nursing, dialysis, labor and delivery, midwife assistant, childbirth education teacher, pediatrics.
I am also a graduate of Trinity School of Natural Health with a degree as an ND. I continue my education with various classes and research. My goal is to share this knowledge with the public, for happier and healthier lives.
