Get some rest

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. Psalm 23:2

As a nurse, I love scripture that shows how God is the true healer of all. I believe this verse explains that rest is essential for healing. In a busy pediatric practice, I frequently encounter parents who want the doctor to just give a drug so their child can go back to school, but more urgently, I see it is because these frazzled, overbusy parents can not take another day off from work. Sadly, these kids need rest which they are not properly getting to heal.

In order to be restored, we must lie down and be physically still. [1] When we are up and moving around, our bodies use large amounts of energy just to carry out the activities we are performing. While we are in a state of rest, the cells of our body can go about the task of repair and renewal. Adequate nutrition is also vital for recovery.

The next time illness comes your way, take time to ask God for guidance about the rest you need. Lie down (without feeling guilty) when your guidance tells you to do so. Make sure you are clear about your guidance. You know in your soul if you are using sleep or rest to retreat from the world. Rest is not meant to be a hiding place. It is meant to be a healing time of restoration where the Lord, your shepherd, watches over you and returns you to health.
