My heart’s desires

Delight yourself in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4

“Delight” (Hebrew- anag: to be glad)

“Desires” (Hebrew – misala: prayer, petition, request)

“Of your heart” (Hebrew – leb: mind, will, intellect. Innermost being)

Most people like to quote this passage but few really believe it is true. The reason that people don’t “get” this proverb is that they don’t realize that they often have hidden agendas buried deeply within their heart and soul.

You may say you want prosperity. Is your work also your joy or are you doing it simply because you have calculated its monetary reward? You may say you desire a life mate. Do you have the qualities you are seeking in someone else? You attract who you are, not who you want to be.

You may say you want to be healthy. Are you willing to let God, and not some human being, make the final decision in every step along your path to recovery as you seek His will? Are you willing to let go of the benefits of being ill, such as getting support and attention? Are you willing to stop being angry with God for things that have happened – or things that didn’t happen – to you in your life?

You must be brave enough to look deeply within at the true desires of your heart because these are what God sees. Which ones are cravings of a little child who was hurt many years ago but who still holds onto those hurts and those fears? And which ones are yearnings of an adult, angry with God for seeming to have let him or her down in the past? These buried desires are powerful, protective mechanisms that control your life until you reveal and transform them.

God satisfies us when we delight and are satisfied in Him

Do you need to investigate and uncover your true desires? If you desire to be whole and contented, examine your heart for your hidden desires that block you from it. See if there are things that hinder your faith and undermine your trust. If so, remove them from your heart and offer them up to the Almighty. Make the desires of your heart clear and pure before God.

We will never be deeply fulfilled or “happy” with the things this world has to offer. If we place our joy and hope in God first, He meets our needs.

Above and beyond our expectations.
