2 Kings 5:1, 9-12 “Now Naaman..had leprosy…Naaman went to the door of Elisha’s house. Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, ‘Go, wash yourself 7 times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.’ But Naaman went away angry and said, ‘I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy. Are not Aban and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than any of the waters of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them and be cleansed?’ So he turned and went off in a rage.”
How interesting that Naaman refused his healing because it didn’t take the form that he thought it should take. The Jordan river was a very muddy, dirty looking river. How could those waters possibly cleanse him? So his arrogance made him choose to keep the leprosy for a while longer. Eventually he reconsidered, washed himself as he was instructed, and was healed.
Too often we react just as Naaman did. We decide what our course of healing “should” look like. Whether it’s healing of our bodies, a broken relationship, or some bad situation. God requires that He is to be our Great Physician (Exodus 15:26) and primary consultant. It may turn out that the path that God wants us to take matches the one we have in mind. On the other hand, it may be that God’s Divine will is something totally different from what we have considered previously. It may even, as in Naaman’s case, defy logic and reason. (wait, you want me to forgive HER? You want me to take herbs along with/or instead of these medical treatments? You want me to give away how MUCH money? etc, fill in your own questions for the Lord.)
Washing seven times in a dirty river in order to be cleansed and healed seems ridiculous and stupid. Think of all the diseases you could get in a dirty river!
Don’t throw away your healing, whether it is physical or situational, by insisting that it be done your way. Trust Jehovah-rapha (the healer), who wants to help you. Vow to consult Him at every step along the way, and follow His commands, no matter what they are or how unusual they may seem. He loves you and wants the best for His children.
