Watch your words

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: “I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites. So tell them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord, I will do to you the very things I heard you say: In this desert your bodies will fall – every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me. Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb…and Joshua.” (Numbers 14:26-28)

“I will do to you the very things you say,” says God Almighty. Do we really understand the staggering meaning of that statement? God plainly tells us that He will fulfill our inner beliefs which are revealed in the words we speak. He is allowing us to determine our lives with our free will. God creates with His Word and He has established that we do the same.

Even though the Israelites had witnessed miraculous signs in Egypt and in the desert, that wasn’t enough for them. Instead, they were loudly proclaiming all the details of their problems. Their words revealed their lack of faith that God would keep His Word and would deliver them to the home He had promised. Oh and did you know that the trip to the Promised land was an 11 day trek? It took them 40 years! We Christians today are not much different, are we?

What about us? For example, do we pray, “Lord help me with my finances?” and then turn around and repeatedly say to everyone, “I’m broke, I have no money”. If so, God says to us, “Then I will give you what you say – you are poor.” Or do we say, “I’ve been praying and following the guidance I hear, I’m just not getting any improvement in my situation”? If so, God says to us “Then I will give you what you say – you are not making any progress with your situation (you can fill in the blank with whatever your issues are). Each of these ordinary statements betrays a lack of faith that the victory over our circumstances has already been won by Jesus Christ.

Let’s guard the words we speak, and make sure they are ones that we desire God to fulfill for us. (“I will do to you the very things you say”) Let us not have the “name it and claim it” mentality for self-serving reasons, but gracious words to honor God, to bless others, and in doing this, we ourselves will be blessed.

Speak those things that are in alignment with God’s word. Let’s pray the solutions we seek instead of whining about the problem. Our God is faithful. ~ Allison

“Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.”
Proverbs 16:24
